Get into Tennis

Whether you are five, fifty five or eighty five, tennis is the sport for you and better still, it is the sport for life. Tennis is a safe non contact sport that does not need to rely on expensive equipment. It can be practised alone or played with 2,3 or 4 people and it is one of the easiest sports to participate in.

Unlike many other sports, tennis is gender neutral and gives equal opportunities for male and female to participate, enjoy and achieve! Whatever your age, gender or physical ability tennis is the perfect sport for you!

Tennis is the perfect sport for a healthy body and a healthy mind. Research has indicated that playing an average one hour of singles tennis is the equivalent of burning 600 calories for men and 420 calories for women.

The National Heart Foundation recommends at least 30 minutes of continuous physical activity per day for adults and at least 60 minutes for children. Tennis is the perfect vehilce to achieve this and receive the following health benefits:
  1. Lower your blood pressure
  2. Improve your cholesterol levels
  3. Control your blood sugar levels
  4. Reduce your risk of developing Type 2 diabetes
  5. Help you maintain a healthy weight
  6. Help you sleep better and feel better
  7. AND IT'S FUN!!!

Tennis is also a great social sport. You may already know that yourself. If you live in an area where tennis is popular, get involved. Even if you have never played, don't be discouraged. Lots of people who play league tennis never played growing up.

There is a beginner's group offered at Northaw and Cuffley tennis club, and another, but more expensive option, is private tennis lessons. Tennis professionals (tennis pros) will show you how to properly swing the racquet...

Whether you choose private lessons or drills, try to attend them regularly, so you will get a good basis and practice! Practice makes perfect is the same concept here as in any sport.

I have always enjoyed watching tennis but never got the chance to play. All my friends played football. It wasn't until 2009 that I joined the tennis club with a friend.
  • Carol Martinez
I joined Cuffley tennis club in 2007 shortly after I moved into the area. Right from an early age I have loved tennis but never seriously thought of joining a club until a friend suggested it, and I have loved ever minute of it.
  • Moira Allen
I joined the tennis club in the Spring of 1965 so have been a member at Cuffley for 45 years!
